Renderer
This multi-media composition for solo percussion, electronic audio, and video projections was written for Jonny by composer Quinn Jacobs in 2021. In this piece, the performer interacts with the audio and video recordings while attempting to “render” all of the various elements together. Quinn and Jonny have previously collaborated on several pieces including Ancient Rhymes Unwinding, Outside Inside, Anima Sequentia, and Genesis Lumina.
Jonny will be premiering Renderer on January 28, 2023, at Array Space in Toronto.
Mad Lib
Jonny commissioned this piece from percussionist/composer Louis Pino. The concept of the piece was to create a relatively loose structure that allows to the performer to make the piece their own by selecting their instrumentation and controlling the live audio processing with MAX software. In Mad Lib, the performer gets to record their own samples, decide on what sound effects are used throughout the piece, and set certain parameters for those effects.
Jonny and Pino premiered Mad Lib at The Space Between conference at McMaster University on April 29, 2022.
Perseveration Loops
In the winter of 2022, Jonny commissioned Perseveration Loops from Toronto-based composer, Greg Harrison. This new piece for drum set, MalletKat, and Ableton Live allows the performer to shape the evolution of the music by triggering harmonic progressions and blending together different electronic elements while playing the melodies and rhythms on the MalletKat keyboard and drum set.
Jonny will be premiering Perseveration Loops on January 28, 2023, at Array Space in Toronto.
Original compositions by Taktus
Jonny’s marimba duo, Taktus, will be writing some new music in preparation for their third full-length album. Taktus has done many of their own arrangements of music by Ann Southam, Philip Glass, and Aphex Twin, but this will be their first venture into cowriting original music.
